The 5MinuteConsult search engine is a state-of-the-art tool designed to get the user to the most useful information as quickly as possible from the point of search.
The search engine utilizes a layer of semantic metadata that has been applied to the site content to allow diverse types of content written by multiple authors and derived from multiple resources to be integrated and connected through topic-based medical language tags that are compliant with the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and that leverage a medical thesaurus with over 250,000 synonyms.
When a user searches for information on 5MinuteConsult, the search engine looks for matches in the layer of semantic metadata to match the true meaning of concepts, rather than the exact words as they appear in the content. In this way, users can find the most relevant information more quickly.
In the event the user cannot find the results he or she is looking for using the semantic search engine, the user will have the option to run a full-text search that searches each word in the data set on their original search query from the search results page. This page will show all instances of the search term in all content types.
Search Results
5MinuteConsult Search results are grouped by object type (Disease & Condition Topics, Images, Algorithms, etc) on the search results page to allow the user to find the needed information without having to sort through long lists of results mixed together by content type
When the 5MinuteConsult search engine finds an individual 5MCC Disease & Condition topic that is a conceptual match with the user's search term, the user will be taken directly to that topic content, bypassing the search results page and saving the user valuable time. Other related content types will always be available from the See Also area on the content page.
Search Filters
Users may filter their search query at the initial point of search to facilitate more specific search results. Search filters are available for Diseases & Conditions, DDx&Tx Algorithms, Lab Tests, Images, Procedures & PT, and Patient Handouts.
The user may also select a ‘Pediatric Only' filter that will restrict semantic search results to Pediatric-specific content.
