Breastfeeding is Safe with SARS-CoV-2
Study Summary
A cohort analysis of women who were found to be SARS-CoV-2 infected or symptomatic had breast milk analyzed for the presence of viral particles and virus that was capable of replication. While SARS-CoV-2 viral particles were found in the milk of 9% women with a positive SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic test, none of the samples had infectious replicating virus.
Discussion
There is so much that is unknown despite 2 years of this virus inhabiting our lives. This study supported previous smaller studies that breastfeeding, even when infectious, does not increase the risk of virus transmission via breast milk.
